They are the aerials of its Liechtenstein Fu220b SN-2 radar set, which turned this former twin engine daytime flying coffin into a lethal night prowler. I/NJG3 was posted to the night defence of Northern Germany in 1945, whose skies were abused by Bomber Command almost on a nightly basis at the time. This aircraft was surrendered to British forces at the end of the war, and had a distinguished late career as a flying museum piece. comment on Flickr Marc Barrot … this Halifax has seen better days… On April 27th 1942, 11 Halifax bombers of No 35 Squadron flew out RAF Kinloss, Scotland, on a high risk mission to sink the German battleship Tirpitz in Norway, at the very limit of their operational range. The mission was a failure. Hit several times by anti aircraft fire during its bombing run and with engines on fire, W1048, a brand new aircraft at the time, belly-landed on nearby frozen lake Hoklingen near Trondheim. Her crew managed to escape the aircraft and the lake, 5 out of 6 made it to neutral Sweden and later repatriation; the sixth - injured - member, Sgt Stevens, was captured by German forces. 12 hours later, W1048 sank to the bottom of the lake through the ice, was reported as missing in action and never heard of again for nearly 30 years. In 1972, it was relocated, salvaged and repatriated to Britain as a training exercise by 71st Maintenance Unit, RAF. In reality, this particular B24M, 44-51228, was built by Ford at the huge Willow Run plant in Michigan, one of the last of its series, and never saw active service in the Second World War. I left for a few minutes. When I came back, the same individual was still maintaining his vigil on top of the same bush. Although I was staring with my camera from a different location, closer to him than the first time around, he just cast a passing glance in my direction without a care in the world. comment on Flickr Marc Barrot … before serving as headquarters 2nd Tactical Air Force for the invasion of Europe, Hillingdon House served as the home of RAF’s 11 Group, who took on the defence of the whole South East, including London, during the Battle of Britain. 11 Group’s CO, AVM Sir Keith Park, lived in a cottage down Wren Road, a minute walk from the entrance of the underground OPS room – practically in his front garden – and 5 minutes walk from his office in Hillingdon House. Drinking this swamp-like water is definitely not recommended :-) Upon further research, it appears this proliferation is not blue-green algae but simple duckweed. Although it does deprive the water ecosystem from oxygen when proliferating like this, it is not toxic in itself. As a matter of fact, its protein content is astonishing, way above soja. But it may have been a literary and maybe political ploy used by reporters to emphasise his adopted brother and co-emperor Marcus Aurelius’s gravitas and auctoritas. In any case, he seemed to have waged a very successful war in the East against the Parthians, by shrewdly delegating his command and limiting the objectives to the reasonable and politicaly expedient. comment on Flickr Marc Barrot … Skytrains are starting their taxi roll, on their way to Normandy for the 75th D-Day celebrations. The aircraft on the right has had quite a busy life. She was part of the first few batches delivered by Douglas to the Army Air Corp in 1941, and saw action in Africa and the Middle East during the war. She was sold to France in 1945 and operated by the French Air Force till the mid sixties. In 1967, she was sold again to Israel and operated by the Israeli Defence Force till finally retired in 1995. Since then, she’s been a favourite at air shows all over the US and made the trip to Europe for the 75th D-Day anniversary celebrations. For the occasion, she wears the livery of 43-15087, a C-47A which dropped part of 3rd battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry in Normandy in the early hours of June 6th. comment on Flickr Marc Barrot … several different portraits – both in pictural and sculptural form – have been reported as being likenesses of Pertinax, so it’s difficult to know whether he was the dignified looking fellow exhibited in the entrance of the British Museum. Publius Helvius Pertinax is certainly described in ancient sources as a distinguished soldier and newly minted senator – his father was a freedman – who was instrumental in bringing down Commodus’s freedman and supremely corrupt councillor Cleander. After Commodus’s assassination, he was hailed as emperor, but his efforts at reforming the state were cut short within 3 months when he was murdered by members of his Pretorian Guard, whose power within the state he was trying to bring in check. His assassination inaugurated a period of civil war which saw no less than 3 candidates fail in their efforts to gather power before Pertinax’s friend and sometimes colleague Septimus Severus managed to gather the remains of Roman power and found a new dynasty. Severus managed to bring some order to the period of anarchy that followed —or more likely predated – the demise of Commodus, of ‘Gladiator’ fame. He showed some talent at keeping at least some of the Roman aristocracy on side, while really establishing what was more or less a military dictatorship. His son Lucius Septimius Bassianus, better known as Caracalla, didn’t hesitate in having his brother murdered upon co-inheriting power from his dad, and dispensed with the niceties of keeping part of the aristocracy on side. He had a most profound influence on the Roman world by extending citizenship to all of its freeborn denizens, but the lack of support for his autocracy outside the military led to his eventual assassination on a Syrian road, as well as an atrocious reputation that survives to this day. After almost 10 years of restoration, she’s on display at the USAF National Museum near Dayton, Ohio. This B-17G nicknamed Sally B, 44-85784, never saw action during the war and ended up flying photographic survey missions for the French Institut Géographique National, a much more peaceful endeavour.
