This Modern World

Although this exhibition is named after Tom Tomorrow's cartoon, it will be firmly grounded in architecture instead of dystopia.

Our third exhibition is due to open in January 2023.

It will remain online for 3 months and will close on March 31st 2023.

Villa Cavrois, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Croix

Europe - Belgium / Sint Niklaas
Stillemansstraat is zelfs beschermd stadsgezicht sinds 2002. Art Deco, sometimes referred to as Deco, is a style of visual arts, architecture and design that first appeared in France just before World War I.Art Deco influenced the design of buildings, furniture, jewelry, fashion, cars, movie theatres, trains, ocean liners, and everyday objects such as radios and vacuum cleaners. It took its name, short for Arts Décoratifs, from the Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) held in Paris in 1925. It combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. During its heyday, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress. From its outset, Art Deco was influenced by the bold geometric forms of Cubism and the Vienna Secession; the bright colors of Fauvism and of the Ballets Russes; the updated craftsmanship of the furniture of the eras of Louis Philippe I and Louis XVI; and the exotic styles of China and Japan, India, Persia, ancient Egypt and Maya art. It featured rare and expensive materials, such as ebony and ivory, and exquisite craftsmanship. The Chrysler Building and other skyscrapers of New York City built during the 1920s and 1930s are monuments of the Art Deco style. In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, Art Deco became more subdued. New materials arrived, including chrome plating, stainless steel, and plastic. A sleeker form of the style, called Streamline Moderne, appeared in the 1930s; it featured curving forms and smooth, polished surfaces. Art Deco is one of the first truly international styles, but its dominance ended with the beginning of World War II and the rise of the strictly functional and unadorned styles of modern architecture and the International Style of architecture that followed. europe, europa, belgium, belgique, belgien, belgië,sintniklaas, artnouveau, architectuur, architecture, architectura, kleurrijk, artdeco, graffiti, dzia, smok All Rights Reserved

comment on Flickr The Chilehaus is a 1922 to 1924 built Kontorhaus in the Hamburg Kontorhausviertel. The architecture of Fritz Höger was exemplary for the brick expressionism of the 1920s, which was inspired by Brick Gothic and Expressionism. With its gross floor area of 36,000 m², the building is one of the first high-rise buildings in Hamburg with up to ten floors on a floor area of 5950 m². With its eastern tip reminiscent of a ship's bow, it has become an icon of Expressionism in architecture. chilehaus, kantorhaus, hamburg, norddeutschland, kantorhausviertel, gebäude, hafenviertel, monochrom,sw,schwarzweis, andreasliwinskas, architektur, ausflugsziel, motive, backstein All Rights Reserved

Villa Cavrois | Explore #422 25.08.2016
The former building complex of Amtsgericht (Local Court) I and Landgericht (Regional Court) I on Littenstraße, corner of Grunerstraße (on the left) in Berlin-Mitte, now seat of the civil jurisdiction of the Landgericht Berlin. The building was constructed 1896-1904 by Otto Schmalz to earlier designs by Paul Thoemer and Rudolf Mönnich. It belonged to a group of "justice palaces" built in Berlin during the German Empire. At the time of its erection, it was in fact Berlin's second largest building after the City Palace. The staircase hall by Otto Schmalz is famous and was often imitated. From 1968 to 1969, the Amtsgericht wing was demolished to make room for a broadening of Grunerstraße. Mayakovskaya
comment on Flickr TheFella | Facebook | Google+ | Twitter | Vimeo | 500px | Getty View on black please! Buy a limited edition print! To tell you the truth, I wasn't too enamoured with Moscow. This may have been partly due to the weather being grey for nearly the entire time. Another problem was the fact that you have to queue for hours for everything remotely touristy. And then discover it's not actually that good. Thankfully, one of the best things about the city is almost free and you don't need to queue; the metro system. This is Mayakovskaya, an art-deco / futurism station on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line of the Moscow Metro. Myself and Mike Murphy had gotten up at around 05:00 and walked to this station for opening time, just so we could have a chance to take some photos with no people in them. It ended up being reasonably busy at this time, but we managed to get by. This was our first station of the day and we continued with about another six before heading topside for some overly-expensive breakfast and unreliable wifi. Check out Mike's take on this photo. The Komsomolskaya Metro Station
comment on Flickr Komsomolskaya is a Moscow Metro station in the Krasnoselsky District, Central Administrative Okrug, Moscow. It is on the Koltsevaya Line, between Prospekt Mira and Kurskaya stations. The station is noted for its being located under the busiest Moscow transport hub, Komsomolskaya Square, which serves Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky and Kazansky railway terminals. Because of that the station is one of the busiest in the whole system and is the most loaded one on the line. It opened on 30 January 1952 as a part of the second stage of the line.
