comment on Flickr Alain Canaque Photo : Philipe Ledru & Martel LEDRU & MARTEL : Si le sujet compte peu, la subjectivité, elle, est totale. Notre conception de la photo commence avant tout par un état d'âme, par un plaisir d’esthète, presque par une jouissance uniquement due à l'environnement ; alors, à ce moment seulement, la photo prend son importance, sa raison d'être. Nous pensons que c'est un moyen de communication, mais cette communication n'existe que si la composition de l'image et le « moment » de cette image se rejoignent. La photographie peut se résoudre à une simple technique mais les motivations photographiques sont compliquées. Il suffit de montrer une scène, un personnage, un lieu, le tout dans un pays lointain, pour démontrer. Nous sommes tout à fait contre le document qui parle, qui explique clairement, qui renseigne. Nous sommes d'autant plus contre que l'on considère souvent la photo comme le support suppléant à une imagination déficiente. Un « individu » disponible, c'est plus qu'un touriste ; un « violeur » inspiré c'est tout à fait un photographe. Être photographe, c'est exprimer, mais c'est aussi être critique grâce seulement à ce qui est vu par l'objectif. On comprend mieux et on aime. La photo devient une super-affiche, son auteur une idole. Mais il restera toujours des nomades qui auront peut-être plus de plaisir à errer dans un territoire plutôt que d'en dresser la carte. comment on Flickr Alain Canaque The two fractal walls of the memorial were erected in 1971 to remember Operation Fall Schwarz, otherwise known as the Battle of the Sutjeska. The military action took place during World War II and saw Axis forces attempt to rout a group of Yugoslavian forces and capture Tito, their leader. The complicated battle saw most of the Yugoslav forces able to escape, including Tito, foiling the Nazis’ plan, which was actually the second attempt at the same strategy. While the the Axis’ plan was a failure, it was not without tragedy. Over 7,000 people were killed, mostly just citizens who could not escape with the majority of the Yugoslavian military forces. To remember both the Nazi failure and the tragic loss of life, the abstract war memorial was constructed. Like many of the memorials constructed in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 70’s the monument is an angular abstraction constructed from bleak grey cement. However despite the tragic roots and brutalist construction, the majestic strangeness of the Tjentiste War Memorial cannot be denied. So Trdat dedicated this temple to the sun goddess Mythra. That is why this temple is the true and unique masterpiece. Garni Temple is Armenia’s only Greco-Roman-style building. After the adoption of Christianity, it became the summer residence of Khosorovdukht, the sister of King Trdat III. comment on Flickr Alain Canaque BRODOVITCH ON PHOTOGRAPHY What is a good journalistic photograph ? I cannot say. A photograph is tied to his time - what is good today may be a cliche tomorrow. There a many so-called schools of photography but i really hate to put labels on things. Every photograph is really giving a visual personal report on something. Wether it’s Smirnoff’s vodka or the model Mercedes-Benz or some event on the street or something in the headlines, the problem of the photographer is to discover his own language, a visual ABC’s to explain this event. The photograph is not only a pictorial report ; it is also a psychological report. It represents the feelings and point of view of the intelligence behind the camera. Each day the audience for photographs sees hundreds of pictures of high technical quality. The public is being spoiled by good technical quality photographs in magazines, on television, in the movies, and they have become bored. The disease of our age is this boredom and a good photographer must successfully combat it. The only way to do this is by invention - by surprise.
